Concrete work is a fundamental part of construction projects. It provides the necessary structure and foundation for where we live, where we work, our roads, sidewalks, and many other structures and places that we encounter every day of our lives. We do not realize how much we depend on it!
Concrete is a mixture of sand, gravel, water, and cement that forms a hard material after it has been poured in place and allowed to harden. Cement itself is a powder made from limestone or other materials and mixed with water to form a paste. Both concrete and cement are very strong, durable materials that can be used for a wide range of applications.
Before any concrete work can begin, it is important to make sure that the area is properly prepared. The subsurface should be leveled off and packed down so that there are no irregularities in the surface. Additionally, drainage should be installed to ensure that the concrete does not become damaged due to pooling water. Once the area is prepared, the concrete or cement can be mixed and poured into place.
Once it has been poured, the concrete needs time to cure and harden properly so that it can withstand use and traffic. Depending on the application, reinforcing materials may also be added to increase strength and durability. Once the concrete or cement has been cured, it can then be finished with a sealant or other type of protective coating in order to protect against wear and tear.
It takes a specialized skill set to make sure all of these steps go perfectly, especially with larger projects.
